Abington is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Boston. In the past, the manufacture of boots and shoes was its primary industry. In 1890, 4,260 people lived here; in 1900, 4,489; in 1910, 5,455; in 1940, 5,708, and in 1990, 13,800. The population was 14,605 at the 2000 census. Abington was first settled in 1668 and was officially incorporated in 1712. A memorial arch to Civil War veterans was dedicated here in 1912. Publication: B.
